What Does a Mentor Do?
Our mentors provide one-to-one support to a student who needs additional help with their school work. This could be a piece of homework or perhaps a particular concept they were struggling to understand at school that week. You will also act as a stable, responsible and reliable adult who listens and encourages.

How Much Time Do I Need to Give?
We ask our mentors to commit to 2 mentoring sessions per month during school term times. Mentoring sessions are held on a Saturday morning from 10am-12pm. Outside of the sessions, there may be some occasional training and social events where you will have the chance to interact and collaborate with other volunteers.

I Don’t Think I Can Remember Anything From School! How Can I Help?
We don’t expect you to know all the answers. We promote a culture of learning together. We encourage mentors to support students in learning how to find information and solve problems. We will always do our best to match your skills and preferences with the needs of our students, so there’s no need to worry if Year 12 maths isn’t your thing!

Am I Too Old or Too Young to Mentor?
Our youngest mentor is in Year 11 and our oldest volunteer just retired from mentoring at the age of 85! We have mentors of all ages and backgrounds, including retirees. As long as you have the time, patience and enthusiasm for learning you can become a mentor.

Where Do I Need to Go?
We have three locations: Butler, Girrawheen and Armadale. You can choose one that is most convenient for you.

What Are the Requirements?
We need you to provide two references who are not family members and you have known for at least 12 months. We also require an up to date police certificate and a current Working With Children check. We can help you get a police certificate and Working With Children check as part of our volunteer onboarding process.
